About Chris Tuck

“I have answered the call from my family, friends and colleagues to return to public service. Our city is falling into disrepair, and I can no longer sit and let the dysfunction continue. As a purpose-driven person I must address the needs of our community. Together we will rebuild Anchorage even better.”

Chris was raised by a single mother of two. Her success was the result of a strong economy in Anchorage. Those opportunities are much more rare today, and Chris is committed to making sure that everyone that wants to work and succeed has the opportunity to do so.

Chris received an excellent education in Anchorage Public schools; it was there he gained his love of reading. Chris attended Fairview, Oceanview, Chinook, and Bayshore Elementary Schools before moving onto Mears Middle School and eventually graduating from Dimond High School in 1984.

Chris went on to an apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and became a journeyman Electrician. Chris is a believer in vocational training and improving people’s lives. He taught at the Electrical Apprenticeship School and worked as a business representative at the IBEW. Recently, he started his own company, Tuck Electrical Services.

Public Service

Chris started his career in public service in the early 90’s when he served on the Anchorage School District’s K-6 Curriculum Development Team. He then served on the Anchorage Education and Workforce Advisory Committee from 2003 to 2007. In 2007, he decided to run for a seat on the Anchorage School Board, won and served as Treasurer on the School Board for two years. In 2008 Chris ran and was elected to the first of seven terms in the Alaska House of Representatives. As a state representative, Chris earned a reputation for listening to his colleagues, considering their ideas, and working across the aisle. As a result, Chris Tuck served in several leadership positions including as House Majority Leader during the 30th and 32nd Alaska State Legislatures.

Chris’s strategic thinking was key to the formation of these bipartisan coalitions that were able to pass many important pieces of legislation.

“One of the things I am most proud of is the creation of the bipartisan Alaska House Majority Coalition. Since 2017, the Coalition has been made up of Independents, Republicans, and Democrats dedicated to enacting real fiscal solutions for the State of Alaska. I was honored to serve as the Coalition’s Majority Leader for four years. My colleagues and I cast some tough votes. In 2017, the Coalition kept a promise to pass a comprehensive fiscal plan. Our plan passed through the House only to be ignored by the Republican-controlled Senate Majority.”

Chris has been a champion on public safety and crime.

In 2019, Chris Tuck led the charge to repeal and replace the flawed criminal justice reform bill, Senate Bill 91, that was implemented by then-Governor Bill Walker. SB 91 became the symbol of Alaska's public safety crisis. Chris worked to craft the compromise bill, House Bill 49, to get rid of Senate Bill 91 and replace it with legislation that empowered law enforcement officers in Alaska to deal with anyone who threatens the safety and security of the people of Alaska.

Chris is a long-time advocate to improve and expand early childhood education in Alaska.

In 2022, Chris played a critical role in passing the Alaska Reads Act, a landmark education reform bill that focused on reading proficiency and expanding pre-K across the state.

“As a father, I learned from firsthand experience that the lessons children learn early can last a lifetime. During my time on the Anchorage School Board, I became convinced that dedicating money and resources towards education is a wise and prudent investment, and the earlier, the better. As a member of the Alaska State Legislature, I always judged public policy by its impacts on children, parents, and families. That’s why I was a proud sponsor of the Alaska Reads Act. The big picture goal of the act is to improve the educational opportunities available to children from pre-K through 3rd grade.”

Chris works hard to ensure energy security and reliability for Anchorage, including renewable energy goals.

In 2010, while serving on the House Energy Committee, Chris Tuck was instrumental in passing legislation creating a state energy policy that ensures Alaska’s energy sustainability. The policy called for 50 percent of Alaska’s electricity generation to come from renewable and alternative energy sources by 2025. The policy also called for the State of Alaska to work to ensure a reliable in-state gas supply for residents.

Chris is a proven defender of education and education funding.

During the 2015 session, Chris and his colleagues in the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition were successful in stopping cuts to public education funding in Alaska including a proposed $16.5 million cut to the Base Student Allocation.

Chris was recognized by the National Parents as Teachers organization.

In 2016, Chris Tuck received the Tweedie Human Services and Early Learning Scholarship Award from the National Parents as Teachers organization. Parents as Teachers is an organization that uses an evidence and research-based model to assist parents with parenting and early childhood development.

Chris fights for long-term budgetary stability and a comprehensive fiscal plan.

In 2017, Chris and the other members of the bipartisan Alaska House Majority Coalition passed the components of a comprehensive fiscal plan for Alaska, including House Bill 115, which would have set up a stable revenue stream to help pay for Alaska’s constitutionally mandated public education system.

Chris worked hard and led the effort to reform the Alaska Code of Military Justice.

In 2018, Chris Tuck was instrumental in updating Alaska’s Code of Military Justice (ACMJ) to clarify crimes and actions that are subject to court-martial proceedings.

Chris, along with Representative Rasmussen, revived the Children’s Caucus.

In 2019, Rep. Tuck worked with several other like-minded lawmakers to restart the dormant Children's Caucus. The goal of the Alaska Children’s Caucus is to develop and support innovative policies to protect children and promote healthy families.
